Apple today announced the immediate availability of iBooks Author, a new free app for creating and publishing multi-touch books for iPad.

The app, available now on the App Store, includes professionally designed templates, or allows you to create your own. Documents created in Page or Microsoft Word can be imported  as well.

Beyond traditional text handling, the app provides authors the ability to create multitouch widgets for interactivity, including content such as photo gralleries, movies, presentations, or even custom HTML.

The app will export for iBookstore or the new iTunes U, as well as PDFs.

The app requires Mac OS X 10.7.2 or higher.

Frank Lowney It looks great but the nay sayers are already hard at work explaining why this is a "land grab" by Apple, see: <a href="http://www.teleread.com/paul-biba/apple-e-textbook-tools-to-jack-up-education-and-hardware-costs-ultimately/" ta...  more

David Wicks I wish Apple would have announced iBooks for Mac and PC as part of today's events. I can't help but think that part of Apple's success with iTunes was the ubiquity of the player.
